Being stumped on Personal Essay

We have an assignment for English 11 and we have to do a Personal Essay. Im still really not sure what my topic is going to be. We were told to try and stay away from the original topics such as death of a loved one, graduation, etc. Im not a good writer and have always had trouble starting the essay, once I get going it tends to flow and ideas start to generate but it is always the beginning the gets me stumped. The one topic that comes to my mind and I have a lot to write about is the bad relationship that I was in with my son's father for 5 years that really never had any ups but many downs. I guess what I need to do is list some of my ideas down on paper and take it from there. Not sure if this is going to be an original enough for the Personal Essay but I think it will be as original as I can get.

  1. I think that would be a good topic, just talk about how it affected you in the long run and what not, and considering you have a lot of information on that it should come easy

  2. Sounds like a fine idea to me as well! Get the details of the relationship down--any esp. vivid memories that stick with you? Then think about how the relationship changed you, how you grew because it, maybe how you got the courage to break it off (if that's how it ended).
